Court Removes David Mark-Led ADC Leadership, Voids Atiku’s Presidential Ticket

A Federal High Court in Abuja has removed the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from office. The judgment, delivered on Thursday, November 5, 2026, puts the party’s 2027 plans in serious doubt.

The court also voided every decision the leadership had taken. That includes the party’s nomination of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate.

For a party that built its 2027 pitch around Atiku, this is the most damaging blow yet in a long and messy leadership fight.

Why the Nomination Fell With the Leadership

A presidential ticket does not exist on its own. It is produced by a party process, run by a party leadership. When a court says that leadership had no valid authority, the decisions it made are pulled down with it.

That is the logic behind the ruling as reported. Once the court voided the leadership’s actions, Atiku’s nomination went with them.

The ticket that paired Atiku with former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi as running mate, announced in July, now sits in legal limbo.

Shehu Sani: Appeal, Do Not Threaten

Reactions came quickly. Shehu Sani, the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate in Kaduna, urged the ADC to prepare an appeal instead of making threats.

He warned the party against answering the judgment with “brimstone and fire.” His message was that the courtroom, not the street or the press, is where this fight should be settled.

Sani also argued that the ADC is paying for a strategic miscalculation. In his view, the party chose to take over an existing and troubled platform instead of registering a brand new one.

In other words, he sees the party’s current troubles as the cost of building on an inherited structure.

Obi Warns of Dangerous Uncertainty

Peter Obi also reacted. He said he was shocked by the ruling and warned that its timing, so close to a general election, creates dangerous uncertainty for candidates and parties.

Obi went further and accused the ruling party of engineering the instability as part of a wider effort to suppress opposition politics. That remains his allegation, and it should be read as such.

Whatever one thinks of that claim, his point about timing is hard to ignore. Parties and candidates cannot plan campaigns when their legal status keeps changing.

Atiku Says He Is Staying in the Race

Atiku has reportedly vowed to remain in the 2027 presidential race despite the judgment. That suggests the ADC will not accept the ruling quietly.

Expect the party to move to the Court of Appeal, and expect supporters of the Mark-led leadership to defend the original process loudly.

How the ADC Got Here

This crisis did not start this week. Since July 2025, when an opposition coalition took over the ADC leadership, the party has been wrestling with disputes over who legitimately runs it.

In April 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) removed Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its records after a Court of Appeal ruling. On April 30, the Supreme Court set that order aside, and INEC restored them.

In July, the Federal High Court dismissed a suit by Leke Abejide and affirmed Mark’s leadership. Other rulings have also voided some of the party’s state congresses.

Each of those moments was a swing in a fight that keeps changing direction. That is why Thursday’s judgment may not be the last word.

The ADC’s most immediate option is an appeal, which is exactly what Sani recommended. Its lawyers will have to move fast, because the election calendar leaves little room for a drawn-out legal battle.

What INEC does with the judgment will matter just as much. The commission has adjusted its position on the ADC leadership before, following court orders, so its next step will be watched closely.

For Atiku, the question is simple. Can the party get this ruling set aside in time to keep his ticket alive?

For voters, the lesson is just as clear. In Nigerian politics today, a candidate’s chances depend as much on what happens in courtrooms as on what happens on campaign grounds.

This is a developing story, and we will update it as the ADC and INEC respond.
